--Measuring results and value

The base from which to measure performance of all digital marketing tactics needs to be established.  That’s pretty straight forward.  But, what should be measured?

Visits – An indicator of effectiveness.  Any marketing effort must increase the number of visitors and/or the rate at which visitors take mutually desirable action (call, email, complete online form, etc).

Pages per Visit – An indicator of interest and quality of content.  The more pages visitors view the more interested they typically are.

Bounce Rate – An indicator of interest, quality of content and focus of advertising.  Visitors viewing a single page before exiting the website are either looking for a telephone number, arrived there in error or were turned off by content or graphics.

% New Visitors – An indicator of effectiveness for driving traffic to website.  Both new and repeat targeted visitors are desirable.

Time On Site – An indicator of interest, quality of content and effectiveness reaching a targeted audience.  Relevancy will hold targeted visitors.

Traffic Sources – An indicator of effectiveness for driving traffic to website.  What portion of website visitors come directly, via search engines and referring websites?

Keyword Rankings – An indicator of how well the website’s keywords are matched to search phrases actually used by prospects.

Competitor Analysis – A performance indicator in the targeted market.  It’s only necessary to be better than the competition, not the universe.

Digital marketing strategies attempt to allocate marketing expenses to optimize these indicators for a correlating return on investment.  Data measured over time enables fine tuning of resource allocation.

For example, an initial digital marketing budget may include $300 for email marketing, $400 for search engine optimization and $500 for search advertising.  Website analytics determines email marketing is returning $15, search advertising $7 and search engine optimization $10 in revenue for every dollar spent.  The logical inclination would be to spend less on search advertising and more on email marketing.
